Vieques: Archivo Vivo - Screening and Q&A
About This Event
Le Moyne College will host a public screening of Vieques: A Living Archive (2023), followed by a Q&A with director and film scholar Juan Carlos Rodríguez. This Spanish-language documentary (with English subtitles) explores the history of Vieques before and after the US military’s departure in 2003. Through interviews with local residents, the film examines the island’s ongoing social, economic, and environmental challenges, focusing on the toxic legacy of the Navy’s bombing range, the resulting ecological and public health crises, and the community’s struggle for sustainable development amid pressures from tourism and gentrification. Director Juan Carlos Rodríguez will engage with Le Moyne and Syracuse University students, faculty, and the broader Syracuse community to discuss the challenges of creating this documentary over more than a decade.
