Book Talk: Greg O'Malley's "The Escapes of David George"
About This Event
Join us for a talk with award-winning historian Dr. Gregory E. O’Malley about his new book, The Escapes of David George: An Odyssey of Slavery, Freedom, and the American Revolution.
This gripping book traces the history of a man born into slavery on a Virginia plantation in the 1740s, whose many attempts to escape turned his life into a wide-ranging saga. Born a century before the famous stories of escapes to the North, the lived experiences of David George reveal the struggles and strategies of enslaved people who lived before states in the North existed or an “underground railroad” to help anyone get there.
Don’t miss this talk on a book that has been described by Henry Louis Gates Jr. as “A gripping, novelistic study of a remarkable man whose life forces all of us to reexamine the realities of colonial slavery and the conflicted legacies of the American Revolution.”
