Quechua in the Castilian of Loreto: A Historic and Linguistic Perspective
About This Event
The influence of Quechua (the most widely spoken Indigenous languages in the Americas) on the Spanish spoken on the coast of Peru has been widely studied by scholars such as Karen Coral and Jorge Ivan Perez (2004), and it has been denominated “Castellano andino” [Andean Castillian]. In the case of the linguistic relationship between Quechua and Amazonian Spanish in Peru, there is still much work to be done. Dr. Fernando Antonio García Rivera (Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia) is a pioneer in this field of scholarship. The Andean-Amazonian Reading Group is devoted to highlighting and encouraging scholarship on the relationship between the Andes and the Amazon. Having Dr. García Rivero as guest speaker is critical for understanding the connecting paths between these regions, and is a foundational intervention for the group to build upon his socio-linguistic scholarship of Quechua in “Castellano Amazónico” [Amazonian Spanish].
